Specialized medical care and hospitalization

Third country nationals with mandatory health insurance in Bulgaria have access to specialized medical care and hospitalisation under the terms and condition as the Bulgarian citizens. In case the health insurance rights are interrupted, the person may be provided with specialized medical care or hospitalization after payment of a fee according to a tariff determined by the specialist or the medical institution.

Specialized medical care or hospitalization (hospital treatment) is performed after a issued referral by a personal general practitioner medical doctor. The visit to a specialist of health insured persons is covered by the health insurance fund, and the person pays only a user fee.

Hospitalization in medical institutions that have a contract with the NHIF is free, except for some additional optional services.
