General information about Bulgaria
Location of the country
Bulgaria is one of the countries in Southeast Europe. It is located in the eastern part of the Balkan Peninsula and occupies 23% of its territory. The country has boarders with Romania to the north; to the west with Serbia and Northern Macedonia; to the south with Greece and to the southeast with Turkey, to the east, along the coast is the Black Sea.
Bulgaria is a member of the European Union.
Language
The official language in Bulgaria is the Bulgarian language. It is one of the 24 official languages of the European Union.
The Bulgarian language uses the Cyrillic alphabet.

Population of the country
According to the National Statistical Institute, as of December 31, 2017 the population of Bulgaria is 7,050,034 people, which represents 1.4% of the EU population.
As of December 31, 2017, 5,181,755 people, or 73.5%, live in the cities, and 1,868,279 people, or 26.5% of the country’s population, live in the villages.
Ethnic structure
The Bulgarian ethnic group comprises 5,664,624, or 84.8% of the persons who have voluntarily declared their ethnic self-determination. Other ethnic groups are Turkish (8.8%) and Roma (4.9%).
